This panel will explore the positives and negatives of sharing a weekend with multiple acts and detail the business side of how to set up a such a tour.

Over the past decade or so, a crop of new companies has grown to handle promotions, distribution and marketing for independent labels and artists. They provide services so labels don't have to do everything in-house, allowing indie labels to compete through services that were once only available by signing exclusive deals with major-label conglomerates. These companies also occasionally work with self-releasing artists directly. The panel will discuss how the Internet has leveled the playing field for distribution and marketing and led to success.

The Americana Music Association will honor the jaw dropping accomplishments of Lucinda Williams, Gregg Allman, Jerry Douglas, Rick Hall and Bob Harris, by presenting them with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the amazing annual Honors & Awards show at the historic Ryman Auditorium. Jim Lauderdale will again serve as master of ceremonies, while Buddy Miller will lead an all-star house band. Then he created the website rockandrolljoe.com, where he invited his fellow musicians to share stories of these journeymen and journeywomen. Now we pick the thread up at this panel, in hopes that Rock & Roll Joes get the dues they deserve.

In this panel, editors of both traditional music magazines and online music publications and blogs will discuss the ways that music media has adapted to the digital age. In years past, publicity was all about reviews and features. Now, it’s equally about mp3 placement, video premieres, and letting the consumer see and hear for themselves. Accordingly, the profession of publicity has expanded from its traditional outreach to print, TV and NPR, to encompass an even wider selection of online media, including communities and social networks. We’ll talk about good ideas and expectations, from mp3s to exclusive live performances. And for all that’s changed, we’ll discuss what’s stayed the same.

ACCOUNTING FOR CREATIVES, Part 2: Revenue Streams Every Musician and Songwriter Should Be Tracking In The Digital Age

This continues the session from this morning with Kristin Thomson, John Simson, John Strohm and Charles Sussman (see 9:00 am) in which these experts help artists understand the where, what and how of multiple revenue streams. In Part 2, they will present findings from the morning’s survey of artists. Each artist will receive a unique appraisal, and the group’s overall, anonymized findings will form the base of a peer-driven discussion.
